What is the difference between a Retiree Chapter and a Retiree Council?

Retiree Chapters are extensions of your union local in the district you retired from that help keep local retirees connected to each other for social and other union-related activities. Not every union local has a Retiree Chapter. Retiree Councils are NYSUT organizations that are geographically-based around New York State; there is even a Retiree Council in Florida since we have so many NYSUT members that retire to that state. Our RC is RC22 and covers the mid-Suffolk to our East End district retirees. The local Retiree Chapters belong to our RC.  Those retirees from districts where there is no Retiree Chapter may become individual members. If you belong to a Retiree Chapter, your Chapter pays your $5 annual participation fee on your behalf.

If you are retired from one of the districts with an official chapter and pay your local chapter dues, you DO NOT need to join as an individual; your chapter pays $5 on your behalf as it comes out of your local dues.
